"Thermogenic" is one of the most-used words in the supplement industry — and one of the least explained. Here's what it actually means.
What Does Thermogenic Mean?
Thermogenesis is your body's process of producing heat. It's a natural metabolic function — your body burns calories as part of generating and maintaining body temperature.
Thermogenic supplements contain ingredients that may support or slightly elevate this process, effectively helping your body burn a few more calories throughout the day through increased metabolic activity.
Common Thermogenic Ingredients and What They Do
Caffeine
The most well-researched thermogenic. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, increases metabolic rate, and supports fat oxidation. It also provides the energy boost most people associate with fat burners.
Green Tea Extract (EGCG)
Contains catechins that work synergistically with caffeine to support fat burning. Green tea extract has solid research behind it for modest metabolic support.
Capsaicin
The compound that makes peppers hot. It activates receptors that increase heat production and may temporarily boost metabolism after consumption.
L-Carnitine
An amino acid involved in transporting fatty acids into cells to be burned as energy. Most useful for people with lower natural carnitine levels.
What Thermogenics Can and Can't Do
Can do: Support energy levels, slightly increase calorie burn, improve focus and workout performance, make sticking to a calorie deficit somewhat easier.
Can't do: Overcome a poor diet, replace exercise, or produce dramatic fat loss on their own. The thermogenic effect is real but modest — typically 50–100 extra calories per day.
Who Are They Best For?
Thermogenics work best for people who are already following a reasonable diet and exercise plan, and want additional support for energy and metabolism — particularly during caloric restriction when energy levels naturally dip.
